چکیده

Enterprise Interoperability can be identified on cultural, rule, process, data, software, object, social network, services, knowledge, electronic ID, cloud, and ecosystem level, whereas the challenge is the conceptual integration across those layers in a flexible way. Meta Modeling as a concept is a proven technology to enable such conceptual integration for both machine computation and human-oriented interpretation for information value creation. Hybrid Modeling is a realization approach to merge different meta models and hence enable the interoperability between conceptual models. Stability is provided by the meta modeling platform whereas flexibility is ensured by hybrid modeling via a holistic integration framework. This approach has been successfully implemented in a list of EU-research projects. This chapter introduces (a) concept models as an instrument for interoperability, (b) a meta model approach as a flexible but stable platform, and (c) hybrid modeling as an approach to flexibly compose the conceptual integration. After discussing this theoretical background, the chapter introduces different realization scenarios of hybrid modeling. Each scenario is supported differently by the underlying meta modeling platform ADOxx®. Here, the experience of a list of EU-research projects is explained and reflected to enterprise interoperability requirements. Sample solutions are introduced, showing different hybrid modeling implementations. Technical overviews of the ADOxx® meta modeling platforms are introduced and references to open development communities are provided to invite readers to realize their own modeling solutions.

Towards an Ontology for Conceptual Modeling

Conceptual modeling can be viewed as a way of expressing human understanding of a body of knowledge. This view can be viewed as distinct from standard notions of data modeling and ontology, which seek to directly describe data and reality. We define conceptual interoperability, give use cases and requirements for it, and introduce the Conceptual Model Ontology (CMO), which satisfies the discuss...

GeoProfile - UML Profile for Conceptual Modeling of Geographic Databases

After many years of research in the field of conceptual modeling of geographic databases, experts have produced different alternatives of conceptual models. However, still today, there is no consensus on which is the most suitable one for modeling applications of geographic data, which brings up a number of problems for field advancement. A UML Profile allows a structured and precise UML extens...

Contexts for Concepts: Information Modeling for Semantic Interoperability

Conceptual information modeling is a well-established practice, aimed at preparing the implementation of information systems, the specification of electronic message formats, and the design of information processes. Today’s ever more connected world however poses new challenges for conceptual information models, as different models should enable mutual connection and reconciliation, even when d...

Unifying Industry-grade Class-based Conceptual Data Modeling Languages with CMcom

From the side of modelers and early-adopter industry, interest in reasoning over conceptual models and other online usage of conceptual models is growing. To obtain a more precise insight in the characteristics of the main conceptual modeling languages, we define the (semi-)standardized ORM, ORM2, UML, ER, and EER diagram languages in terms of the new generic conceptual data modeling language C...

Applying the Levels of Conceptual Interoperability Model in Support of Integratability, Interoperability, and Composability for System-of-Systems Engineering

The Levels of Conceptual Interoperability Model (LCIM) was developed to cope with the different layers of interoperation of modeling & simulation applications. It introduced technical, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, dynamic, and conceptual layers of interoperation and showed how they are related to the ideas of integratability, interoperability, and composability. The model was successfully ap...
